The Quest for Quality

When Sayoni Banerjee, the US recruiting manager of ABB, took on the project of improving quality of hire she found inconsistent business processes often common in many large organizations. With a team of about 20 Talent Acquisition specialists, Banerjee took on three key initiatives to guarantee better hires and encourage her team to look beyond resumes. The three initiatives included training or retraining hiring managers on performing better behavioral interviews, offering managers the option of conducting video interviews, and lastly, reinventing an outdated process limited by legal issues: manual reference checking.

The typical reaction to reference checking is that it is a process from the past. It used to be effective, but now that legal departments prefer nobody participates in them, it is difficult to obtain substantial information about a candidate. Often, reference checking is done at random, without scripted questions, resulting in little to no added value. “It was done because it has always been done. It was a check the box activity, and nobody really asked the question: why are we still doing it that way?” said Banerjee.
